Breaking News: Obama Admits Healthcare Overhaul May Die On Hill

Tell Congress, Wake Up America, YOU Can Still Stop Obamacare

FaxDC.com wants to send this urgent and personalized Blast Fax message to all 535 members of the House and Senate for YOU.

Alert: After insisting for a year that failure was not an option, President Barack Obama is now acknowledging his healthcare overhaul may die in Congress.

His tone at a Democratic National Committee fundraiser Thursday night verged at times on defeatist. Even while saying he still wanted to get the job done, Obama bowed to new political realities. Democrats no longer command a filibuster-proof Senate majority, and voters and lawmakers are far more concerned with jobs and the economy than with enacting sweeping and expensive changes to the health system.

"I think it's very important for us to have a methodical, open process over the next several weeks, and then let's go ahead and make a decision," Obama said Thursday night.

"And it may be that ... if Congress decides we're not going to do it, even after all the facts are laid out, all the options are clear, then the American people can make a judgment as to whether this Congress has done the right thing for them or not," the president said. "And that's how democracy works. There will be elections coming up and they'll be able to make a determination and register their concerns one way or the other during election time."

"Here's the key, is to not let the moment slip away," Obama also said.

Sweeping health legislation to extend medical coverage to more than 30 million uninsured Americans passed both chambers of Congress last year and was on the verge of completion before Republican Scott Brown's upset victory in a Massachusetts special U.S. Senate election last month. Brown was sworn in Thursday, giving Republicans 41 votes, enough to block the initiatives of the Democratic majority.

Now the health legislation hangs in limbo. Lawmakers are looking to Obama for guidance, but he has not publicly offered specifics. His signals have been mixed. At the DNC event he said Republicans should be part of the process - something they've shown little interest in and that would doubtlessly drag out a legislative effort that many rank-and-file Democrats want to end quickly.

"The next step is what I announced at the State of the Union, which is to call on our Republican friends to present their ideas. What I'd like to do is have a meeting whereby I'm sitting with the Republicans, sitting with the Democrats, sitting with health care experts, and let's just go through these bills. ... And then I think that we've got to go ahead and move forward on a vote," Obama said Thursday. "But as I said at the State of the Union, I think we should be very deliberate, take our time. We're going to be moving a jobs package forward over the next several weeks; that's the thing that's most urgent right now in the minds of Americans all across the country."

Hommage à un Homme de Coeur (Tribute to a Man of Heart) - J. Eugene Boivin

The top paragraphs are the French article that appeared on December 24, 2009 in the Le Quotidien Newspaper in the Sagenay area located near Chicoutimi Québec, Canada. The lower paragraphs are the English translations.

Tribute to a Man of Heart

Mr. Eugene Boivin lives in Rumford, Maine, owns a cottage adjoining mine in L'Anse-aux-Maples. I am the spokesman for his friends of this area who know him and his wife very well.

Giant

In my opinion, Mr. Boivin is a giant, who renders services to everyone, and feels committed to assist people with any type of task, or by his ability to construct or perform necessary repairs to a cottage or home. He and his wife have become equally well known throughout the region. They have traveled here since the mid 1980’s in search of his parentage, which originated here. I know he has left his mark wherever he has gone. With the use of his far-reaching voice, he knows how to make himself heard everywhere with his simple good-heartedness and his precise advice. In addition to that, he invites people and friends from his community to join with us to visit our spectacular area. I also pay homage to his wife who has always assisted him in his travels. When Lucien Morin and I had the occasion to visit Mr. Boivin in his hometown in America, we observed that his fellow-citizens have great affection and admiration for him, and that he is highly regarded by all. We respectfully thank him.

President Obama's State of the Union Address

Obama’s State of the Union Address (Full Text)

Following is the transcript of President Obama's State of the Union address, delivered Jan. 27, 2010, as released by the White House:

Madam Speaker, Vice President Biden, members of Congress, distinguished guests, and fellow Americans:

Our Constitution declares that from time to time, the President shall give to Congress information about the state of our union. For 220 years, our leaders have fulfilled this duty. They've done so during periods of prosperity and tranquility. And they've done so in the midst of war and depression; at moments of great strife and great struggle.

It's tempting to look back on these moments and assume that our progress was inevitable -– that America was always destined to succeed. But when the Union was turned back at Bull Run, and the Allies first landed at Omaha Beach, victory was very much in doubt. When the market crashed on Black Tuesday, and civil rights marchers were beaten on Bloody Sunday, the future was anything but certain. These were the times that tested the courage of our convictions, and the strength of our union. And despite all our divisions and disagreements, our hesitations and our fears, America prevailed because we chose to move forward as one nation, as one people.

Again, we are tested. And again, we must answer history's call.

About Kevin Scott (I) for Governor of Maine

Kevin L. Scott was born in Rumford, Maine and grew up in the neighboring town of Mexico, Maine. His hard work ethic, honesty, and moral values can all be traced to his family upbringing and the community environment in which he was raised. Like many Maine voters, Kevin has no spectacular claim to fame or history of trying to "one up" the next person. Rather Kevin Scott is a true Maine citizen with humble origins, a track record of hard work leading to success, and a genuine desire to limit the intrusion of government into our everyday lives. During this 2010 Governors campaign many political candidates will be making claims of what they will do for Maine. Kevin makes no false claims of personal achievements or promises - rather, Kevin is a man who understands success comes from those who we work with, who we team with, who we count on and trust as we face challenges. His committment to providing the leadership, courage, and common sense that Maine voters are demanding in this day and age is his only campaign pledge. Maine voters have had enough of broken promises and empty campaign slogans. Kevin Scott is hear to say "keep your faith" and remember the golden rule. We will, we can, and we must work together to make improvements necessary to ensuring the best possible present, and future, for Maine.

Introducing Senator Scott Brown (R) of Massachusetts

The Second American Revolution

Submitted by Ron Theriault (Rumford, Maine)

On April 19th 1775, in the Colony of Massachusetts, common Americans took up arms and started the First American Revolution to gain their freedom from a repressive Government with the shot that was heard around the world. Today, January 19th, 2010, the common folks of Massachusetts have fired the first shot of the Second American Revolution that now aims to shake off our own repressive Government and it too will be heard around the world. Americans do not submit to oppressive Governments either foriegn or domestic.

In a state where all major offices are held by Democrats, Massachusetts voters have sent a strong message to Washington by electing Republican Scott Brown by over 100,000 votes. Despite what the pundits have to say, this race was indeed a reflection of voter anger against President Obama as he continues to ignore the citizens of this country and continues his Socialist agenda. This election will add fuel to the Tea Party Express and other conservative groups as we head to the Mid-term elections of November.

It is at their own peril that candidates ignore the anger of the common voters and the dedication of the grass roots efforts to turn our country back to position of social conservatism, fiscal responsibility and Judeo-Christian social values. We are not the country that will stand by while Federal Laws disadvantage our elderly at the later stages of their lives. We will not blindly follow the insensitivity of killing our yet to be born citizens all in the name of Socialism. We will respect the men and women of our military and their proud history of securing freedom not only for ourselves, but for the world. No more apologizing for being the rescuer of the world, no more apologizing for being the best country in the world. We can now start the course to bring this country back to a fiscally strong, morally correct beacon of hope for everyone around the globe.

Poliquin Leads in Cash Contributions and Cash On-Hand for End-of-Year Reporting Period

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brunswick – Today, Bruce Poliquin, candidate for Maine Governor, announced that his campaign raised $225,468 in cash from 579 individual contributions during the end-of-year reporting period – considerably more than any other Republican candidate. In addition, Poliquin received $129,765 through in-kind donations, making his total for the last reporting period $355,233. He finished the year with 1037 total individual contributions.

When combined with the fundraising period ending on June 30 of last year, Poliquin brings his total cash and in-kind contributions to $632,172 for all of 2009. By comparison, his three closest opponents totaled cash and in-kind contributions of just over $88,000, $85,000, and $41,000 respectively.

Subtracting expenditures and in-kind contributions, Poliquin starts 2010 with roughly $300,000 cash on hand with less than five months to go in the GOP primary.

"All the hard work is paying off," said Poliquin. "We have more than 1000 individual contributions. That speaks for itself. Not only will we have the necessary resources to win, but we have a winning message that continues to attract new supporters."

To his cash total for the most recent reporting period, Poliquin invested $100,000 in his own campaign. The remaining $125,468 eclipses his nearest primary opponent by more than $50,000, and the remaining candidates by more than $80,000. Poliquin's cash on hand is roughly twice that of his closest primary opponent and well beyond the remaining candidates.

"I've invested in my campaign, and I'll continue to do so," Poliquin added. "But we've also demonstrated the ability to attract more support than any other candidate in our race. We will continue to run a 24/7 operation reaching out to voters, attracting supporters, recruiting volunteers, and making the best case that Maine needs a strong manager to address our economic challenges."

Totals have been updated from projections the campaign made earlier in the year.

Portland, ME - Republican gubernatorial candidate Matt Jacobson announced the results of his strong volunteer fundraising efforts to date. The Jacobson for Governor Campaign Committee raised more than $88,000 through December 31, 2009. The campaign raised another $10,000 in contributions so far in January, bringing the total raised to just under $100,000.

85% of Jacobson's contributions are from Maine.

"It is very encuraging that so many Maine people have heard the message of this campaign and are supporting us with their own checkbooks," notes Matt Jacobson. "I am humbled by their belief that Maine can do better with a proven and successful leader as our next Governor."

Now that the Republican primary field appears set and the public's attention is begginning to turn to the gubernatorial campaign, Jacobson will be bringing on fundraising and field staffers to ensure that the campaign has adequate additional resources to get its message out to people all across Maine this spring.

"Maine people will now have the chance to evaluate the candidates based on their respective qualifications to become the state's next Chief Executive," said Jacobson. "It can't be politics as usual in Maine anymore. We need to elect proven and successful private sector leaders - both as Governor and as legislators - if we are going to put Maine on a better course for jobs and opportunity. I look forward to an energetic campaign."

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, "I Have a Dream..."

Martin Luther King, Jr., A Man Among Men by Lou Marin

"Anybody here seen my old friend Martin?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
I just looked 'round and he's gone."
-Abraham, Martin, and John - Dion

From Atlanta to Memphis
his star burned bright,
snuffed out too soon,
but isn't that the way
of truly good and Godly Men?

He only trod the earth
for 39 years
but his legacy lasts forever.
Isn't that the way
of truly Godly Men?

From the pulpit as a Baptist Minister,
he heard a greater calling,
a voice in a hate filled wilderness.
He heeded the message
and gave all, including his life.
Isn't that the way
of committed Godly Men.

When blacks had to ride
in the backs of Birmingham buses
he organized a boycott,
standing for what was right.
Helping others is the way
of righteous, Godly Men.

"I have a dream," rolled forth
to the million men marching
upon Washington in 1963.
Ministering to the masses
is the way of Godly Men.

The Nobel Prize for peace
was given to Dr. King.
He was the youngest in history.
Notice and acclaim
are hard won by Godly Men.
He championed the rights
of the poor and down trodden.
Lifting others up
is the legacy of Godly Men.

A crusader for peace,
from the pulpit
He sought an end to the on
going Vietnam War.
Peace for all
is the prayer of Godly Men.

Shots rang out in a Memphis night.
Hate extinguished
Martin Luther King Jr.'s light,
but we will never forget the message
of this Godly Man.

We the people have come a long way
since that hot Atlanta day
when the baby King was born.
I pray that we truly have
love, peace and total equality one day.
For Dr. King's vision I pray.
One day we all shall stand,
among the ranks of Godly Men.

Anybody here seen my old friend Martin?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
I just looked 'round and he's gone.

Didn't you love the things that they stood for?
Didn't they try to find some good for you and me?
And we'll be free
Some day soon, and it's a-gonna be one day ...
-Abraham, Martin, and John - Dion

I remember the sun
but not the cold
as I contemplate
January's past.

The beauty of fog
frozen on the arms
of skeletons
in my backyard
twinkle with
a million lights.

The sun's rays
illuminates life;
a living Christmas tree
past season,
where only dormant,
dry, sapless
stalks were yesterday.

I could lament
cold and winter
and how
cabin fever
is starting to poke
and prod
at our doors.

But instead
I chose to remember
the sun
and beauty.

Leaders to Address State Fiscal Crisis: News Conference To Call For Cuts In War Spending as Vehicle to Fund State Programs

For Immediate Release

Contact: Bruce Gagnon 443-9502 or Lisa Savage 399-7623

Leaders from peace, church, health care, education, and social service communities will hold a news conference in Augusta, Maine on Thursday, January 14 at 11:00 am to call for cuts in war spending as a way to help Maine state government deal with its current fiscal crisis. The news conference will be held in the Hall of Flags inside the state capital in Augusta.

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have already cost Maine taxpayers $2.5 billion according to the National Priorities Project. http://www.nationalpriorities.org/costofwar_home

“If not for the money that has been wasted on the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan we would not be in the fiscal crisis that we face today in Maine,” said Lisa Savage, public school teacher and a leader in the new statewide coalition called Bring Our War $$ Home. http://www.bringourwardollarshome.org/

“We will bring people together from around the state who are willing to address the elephant in the middle of the room. Our spending on endless war is killing the national economy as more than 40 states are now in fiscal crisis. We are not going to be able to cut our way out of this mess, tax our way out, nor will we be able to ‘grow’ our way out of this. Unless we cut military spending immediately there will be no serious recovery and no real stabilization of our state budget,” Savage stated.

A recent study, “The Employment Effects of Downsizing the U.S. Military” by UMASS-Amherst Economics Department, found that military spending actually creates fewer jobs than any other kind of investment.

The UMASS study reveals that for every $1 billion of spending on military production 8,555 jobs are created. But when that same amount of money is spent on home weatherization 12,804 jobs are created or when spent on education 17,687 jobs result. http://www.peri.umass.edu/fileadmin/pdf/working_papers/working_papers_151-200/WP152.pdf

“The little reported truth is that military spending is bad for the economy and creates fewer jobs and less tax revenue for state and local government than does other kinds of investment,” said Savage.

Bring Our War $$ Home is calling on all elected officials in Maine to immediately begin addressing this issue of mounting military spending while education, social spending, and infrastructure funding are cut.

Among those planning to speak at the January 14 news conference in Augusta are:

  • Michael Brennan – former State Senator from Portland
  • Dr. Robert Hayes - D.O. from Winslow
  • Rachel Talbott Ross – NAACP from Portland
  • Lisa Savage – Peace activist and public school teacher from Solon
  • Rep. Peter Stuckey – State Representative from Portland
  • Mary Beth Sullivan – Social worker from Bath
  • Rev. Gary Vencill – United Methodist Church minister from Prospect

Bring Our War $$ Home
is a new coalition in Maine that intends to actively take this message to the citizens across the state. The coalition is made up of the following organizations: Americans Who Tell the Truth; Camp Alex For Peace; Code Pink Maine; Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space; The Kennebunks Peace Department; Maine Green Independent Party; Maine Veterans for Peace; Midcoast Peace & Justice; Pax Christi Maine; Peace Action Maine; Peace & Justice Center of Eastern Maine; PeaceWorks; Peninsula Peace & Justice - Blue Hill; Union of Maine Visual Artists; and Waterville Area Bridges for Peace & Justice

Don't Get Scammed When Returning Items

Marden's, Rumford, Maine

To Whom It May Concern:

I wish to inform people of my recent Christmas tree buying experience. For the first time in twenty years, we decided to go with an artificial tree. We bought one from Mardens for seventy-three dollars ($73.00) that came with eight hundred (800) colored lights and revolved three hundred and sixty degrees (360⁰ ) continually! It was a beautiful tree, but after a week or so, it stopped revolving. At that point, I had the skirting down, presents everywhere, my free-standing Mr. and Mrs. Snowman, and my Santa Claus all set up, and the thought of breaking it all down to return the tree before Christmas was daunting to say the least.

When I did return the tree to the store on January 2nd (within the thirty (30) day stated requirement), the clerk said I could only get a 50% refund as it was a Christmas item and was being returned after Christmas. I was immediately irate, to say the least as I had my receipt and was in compliance with their stated policy of "returning the item within thirty (30) days for my hassle free refund".

I asked to speak with the manager. When the manager, Roberta Wallace, came to the front of the store, all she would do was keep repeating that I should have returned the tree when it stopped working! I explained to her what that would have entailed, and besides, I did not realize I was working under a time constraint as my receipt stated that as long as I returned the item within thirty days, with my receipt, I would get a "hassle free" full refund. When I asked Ms. Wallace to show me where on the receipt it states that "Christmas items will only be refunded at fifty percent (50%)", she stated that, "Well it doesn't say it on the receipt, it's just store policy".

When I said I wanted to speak to her supervisor because I was not willing to settle for a fifty percent (50%) refund, Ms. Wallace stated that "I'm it, I manage the entire store, there is no one else to go to." I replied with "Oh, so you own the store, make all business decisions, cut all payroll checks, etc.?" She said that no, she didn't own the store. I said then there is someone you report to, a district manager, the CEO, the owner, someone. I reiterated that I wanted to talk to her superior and was becoming quite upset at this point. This woman absolutely refused to honor Marden's contract and I told her what she was doing was a crime, that it was consumer fraud!

I referred to the terms of my receipt/contract which stated that upon returning an item to the store within 30 days, a full refund will be issued! When she realized I wasn't leaving until this issue was resolved, she said she would "make a call" but as this was Saturday, she couldn't do anything until Monday. I said "just to reiterate, you told me you were the store manager, yet you can't authorize a $35.00 customer refund?!"

I said fine, I gave her my name and number and told her I would be expecting her call Monday. Well, I went to the store Monday afternoon at which point Ms. Wallace told me she had a call into Walt Huffman, her manager, and was waiting for a return call. When I stated that it was getting quite late in the day she said "The day is not over yet." At that point, I showed her the following documents (please click on attachments) and she responded that she thought I was "a little over the top!" to which I replied if I didn't get my FULL refund that day, I was fully prepared to initiate a civil suit within the local court system, a criminal complaint with the attorney generals office, and a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, their consumer fraud division.

Miraculously, I received a telephone call within twenty (20) minutes saying my full refund was available to me anytime I wanted to come by the store!

Considering what I had to go through and the legal avenues I was prepared to pursue, I cannot help wondering how many people have been defrauded by this company. Not only how many were willing to just accept the fifty percent (50%) refund, but how many more did not know that they had avenues to pursue, and, furthermore, that they were the victims of consumer fraud?!
